This operation strengthens the positioning of the Port of Huelva as a key port in the new energy transition scenario

The Port of Huelva is the first port to welcome Mercuria’s first New Generation LNG Vessel to discharge in the Iberian Peninsula. Departing from the Sabine Pass LNG export terminal in the United States, this marks the first visit that this global LNG trader’s most modern vessel has made on the Iberian Peninsula. This operation strengthens the positioning of the port of Huelva as a key port in the new global energy transition scenario.

Alberto Santana, President of the Port of Huelva, expressed his gratitude to Mercuria, the ship’s captain, the Enagás Terminal and Next Maritime, the shipping agency, for selecting the port of Huelva for this important operation. Additionally, Santana emphasized that the Port of Huelva continues to work closely with the port community in general and with Enagas in particular, to enhance its competitive position in energy traffics.

The LNG carrier Puteri Saadong docked at the Enagás jetty, where it unloaded 167.300 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (approximately 80,000 tons). The unloading of this type of cargo bolsters the Port of Huelva’s position as a key player in ensuring supply within the global logistics chains for low-carbon transition fuels.

The ship was consigned by the Huelva-based shipping agency, Next Maritime, in close collaboration with the Enagás Terminal and the Port Authority, ensuring the success of this operation.

The Puteri Saadong was built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyards in Ulsan, South Korea, and was delivered in February 2024. It features the latest technologies in liquefied natural gas transportation.

The Strategic Plan of the Port of Huelva 2023-2030, with a vision towards 2050, promotes the growth of the “Energy and Industrial Cluster, driving clean fuels”. The importance of LNG as a low-emission fuel within the framework of the energy transition means that strategic and operational objectives defined in this plan are actively pursued by the Port of Huelva.

The Port of Huelva continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and the guarantee of supply, as do the other stakeholders involved in this logistics chain.
